A pair of original antique Italian 19th century Venetian Blackamoor statue figures. Made from carved wood with gesso overlay and hand painted to finish. This pair of Blackamoors are particularly charming with turquoise, green, orange, blue and gold colours. Each figure holds a tray and is stood on an octagonal base painted to simulate marble.
Blackamoor art was particularly popular from the 17th to 19th century in Venice and Italy as a whole. The art came from a widening appeal of what would then have been considered relatively unknown exotic cultures, in this case the Moors of North Africa. Wealthy people from these times would have employed Moors to work in their households and dressed them in opulent clothing to further show their wealth and prestige, being extremely popular in aristocratic homes across the whole of Europe.
