A striking, large-scale impressionistic oil on board titled 'Emperor', signed by renowned artist Leslie Goodwin, MBE, RWA, RS, FRSA (1929–2022).

The work presents a haunting, dramatic portrayal of Napoleon Bonaparte. Goodwin expertly employs broad, sweeping background brushstrokes alongside a heavily textured impasto technique to construct the figure. Rich highlights and layered paint give the impression that Bonaparte is physically emerging from the painting.

Set in a limed wooden frame with gilt highlights.

Leslie Goodwin MBE (1929–2022) was a prominent British painter, art critic, educator, and broadcaster whose vibrant work across oils, watercolours, and pastels gained widespread acclaim. Born in Leicester, he trained at the Leicester College of Art (1949–1955) before launching a career as a commercial artist and fine painter whose works were regularly exhibited at prestigious venues—including the Royal Academy and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours—and eventually entered major private collections, such as that of King Charles III. Alongside continuous international lecture tours across the United States, Goodwin spent over two decades as the resident art critic for the Leicester Mercury, broadcasted on art techniques for the BBC, and taught at the University of Leicester until his retirement in 1994. Recognized for his vast contributions to the arts, he was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2000 Millennium New Year Honours and held fellowships with leading national arts societies before passing away peacefully at age 92 on April 21, 2022.
