A unique English mid Victorian ( 1868 ) anthromorphic taxidermy case depicting the story of "Who Killed Cock Robin ".

 

Set with the sparrow with his quiver, bow and arrow high on a branch, poor Cock Robin with an arrow in his chest with the fish catching the blood in a shell.

 

16 birds dressed with black sashes in the Funeral procession with Cock Robin layed out in a coffin with Crow dressed as a vicar reading from the Bible, Thrush singing a dirge from above and a Tawny Owl holding a spade having just dug the grave. The grave head stone bearing the date 1868 when this piece was made.

 

All set and mounted a natural foliage setting, over 20 birds are watching the proceedings. 

 

Across the bottom of the case the story of who killed Cock Robin in written. 

 

Full family written providence accompanies this piece. 

 

In 1870 Mr W Wright was a farmer at Thorpe Acre adjoining Garendon Park near Loughborough Leicestershire he purchased the case of  birds from Mr G Cresswell of Thorpe Acre he was very fond of doing this work in his spare time. After he died Mrs Wright gave the case to her Grand daughter Minnie and her husband Will Antill, they were the caretakers of the Westminster Bank in High Street Loughborough. After Will died Minnie made a will and left the case of birds when she died September 23rd 1949, to William and Clara Pepper. Clara was Minnie's sister, Then we gave it to our grand daughter Margaret Burton of Rothley Road Mountsorrel Leicestershire 1950. With them until present day.
